UK Divorce Scam or Counseling for Couples?

Category: Counseling, Marriage 69 0

DivorceIn recent weeks, authorities have found a pretty intricate scam ring taking place – and it’s probably not what you’re thinking. Apparently, Italian couples have been filing for divorce in the UK.

So, how was this scam circle found? A clerk at Burnley county court noticed that two separate Italian couples had filed for divorce using the same residential address – in Berkshire, more than 200 miles away.

The scam goes beyond these two couples and is actually a single fraudster that had convinced 137 different courts throughout England and Wales to grant fake divorces to 179 Italian couples. What was the point of this divorce scam?

In Italy, divorces are not granted before a three-year separation period, even when the divorce is consensual. Divorce has only been legal in Italy since 1974, and it’s pretty complicated. During this three-year period many may seek counseling for couples and the marriages are saved.

Getting help when you need it

For the last 30 years, about 50% of all first marriages have ended in divorce. Throw education levels, religion and other factors in the mix, and that number could be higher. Divorce can be stressful and scary – especially when there are children involved. Sometimes, this is the only decision – all marriages cannot be saved, after all. But for some, there is hope.

So, how do you know if counseling for couples is right for you? The answer is simple: if you want the marriage to work, it’s worth giving it a shot. Here are some instances in which you might consider getting some professional help:

  • If you don’t know how to resolve your issues. When a couple begins to notice discord in their interaction, a therapist might be worth considering. Lots of times, couples know that there is something wrong but they just don’t know how to fix it. This is a great time to get a third-party involved.
  • All communication is negative. If communication between the two of you has disintegrated into only the negative, you might need a little help getting it back in the right direction. Negative communication leads to depression, hurt feelings and even lack of communication.
  • Someone has cheated. If one or both partners have had an affair or has even considered doing so, counseling might be a good idea. Recovering from infidelity is not always impossible, but it takes a lot of hard work.
